| Cataract surgery In the course of cataract development, visual perception continues to change: colours seem to be paler, contrasts less sharp and light sensitivity (especially at night) increases. During cataract surgery, the opaque lens is removed and replaced by a clear artificial one (intraocular lens = IOL). In severe cases an untreated eye cataract can result in a complete loss of vision due to increasing opacity of the lens.
The most common indications which necessitate a vitrectomy are secondary changes due to pathologies of the surrounding eye tissue such as detachment of the retina, retinal tears, and intra-vitreal hemorrhage due to proliferous diabetic retinopathy. |
