Dry eye syndrome
Development and symptoms
The dry eye syndrome is a chronic lack of lubrication and moisture in the eye. Normally we blink every 5 to 10 seconds. While blinking, tear fluid is spread over the cornea. Reduction of tear fluid and changes in the chemical composition of the tear film are characteristics of the dry eye syndrome.
Environmental conditions, computer work and air conditioning as well as pharmaceuticals and other factors such as age or hormonal dysfunctions promote the development of dry eyes.
Typical symptoms: dry, burning, scratching, red and teary eyes as well as foreign body sensation.
Treatment options
Nowadays ophthalmologists diagnose 1 out of 5 patients with dry eye syndrome. Pharmacies provide various moistening agents to quickly treat the accompanying symptoms.
Medical professionals and pharmacists generally recommend products without preservative agents. Moistening agents with preservatives can harm the cornea and cause allergies. They can also lead to premature evaporation of the tear film and consequently to dry eyes.
HYLO-COMOD® eye drops,
HYLO-CARE® eye drops and
VITA-POS® eye ointment are preservative-free, very well-tolerated OTC products based on the patented COMOD® system for the treatment of dry eyes.
