| Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Apart from an eye cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common age-related retinal diseases. AMD occurs with the degeneration of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision, resulting in a loss of vision in the centre of the visual field. Colour perception and contrast sensation weakens and lines appear to be blurry. In Western developed countries, AMD is one of the most common reasons for loss of central vision in adults over 60. The development of AMD is primarily a result of the natural aging process but can be accelerated by exposure to heavy UV radiation, unbalanced nutrition, stress, smoking and a high blood pressure as well as genetic factors such as light skin, gender, etc.
