Vitrectomy
A vitrectomy is a sub-step during eye surgery when parts of the vitreous are surgically removed.
There are several indications which necessitate a vitrectomy. The most common reason however, are secondary changes due to pathologies of the surrounding eye tissue. The following diseases necessitate a vitrectomy:
• Severe detachment of the retina (ablatio retinae)
• Injuries, retinal tear
• Lenticular ectopia or foreign bodies in the eye
• Intravitreal hemorrhage due to proliferous diabetic retinopathy
• Vitreous opacities (muscae volitantes)
• Endophthalmitis
