AMD

The eye: A sensitive sense organ

The human eye is one of the smallest but most important and most sensitive sense organs. 90 % of the sensory perception takes place in our eyes. About 80,000 neurones transfer information that has been captured in our visual centre to our brain.
Over the years, our eyes are exposed to permanent strains: besides environmental factors, stress and unbalanced nutrition, the natural aging process is the main cause for the impairment of vision.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Apart from eye cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common age-related retinal diseases. AMD occurs with the degeneration of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision, resulting in a loss of vision in the centre of the visual field. Colour perception and contrast sensation weakens and lines appear to be blurry. In Western industrialized countries, AMD is one of the most common reasons for loss of central vision in adults over 60. The development of AMD is promoted by heavy UV radiation, unhealthy nutrition, stress, smoking and a high blood as well as genetic factors (e.g. light skin, sex, etc.) and especially the natural aging process.

How can VITAMAC® Day & Night Capsules reduce the risk of AMD?

With advancing age, the human organism needs sufficient vitamins and nutrients to strengthen the body’s own eye protection system. Vitamin and nutrient intake inhibits the development of free radicals in the eye. Free radicals generally fulfil essential body functions but over-exposure to sunlight, alcohol and an unbalanced diet promote their overdevelopment.
So called antioxidants such as certain vitamins, micronutrients, phytochemicals, e.g. lutein and zeaxanthin, effectively protect the body against free radicals. With age, the body’s own protective mechanism against free radicals weakens. For this reason the importance of reducing the risk of eye illnesses such as AMD through regular vitamin and nutrient intake increases considerably.

The self test

Only your ophthalmologist can tell you if you suffer from AMD or not but an early diagnosis is an important step to preserving your vision. Symptoms of AMD can be detected by means of the Amsler Net Test.
